Sleep on this.

High-end sheets can cost hundreds, sometimes thousands — and they’re not always worth it. Indeed, “there is a lot of price inflation with sheets,” says Ben Trapskin, the founder of SleepSherpa.com, which reviews mattresses, pillows and bedding. One reason: “There’s a narrative around sheets; they are a status symbol,” which can lead some companies to charge a ton, he explains.

So MarketWatch asked experts who review bedding for their picks of the most comfortable sheets at the most comfortable price. Here are the best under-$50 sheets, according to experts.

Mellani Brushed Microfiber Bed Sheets: About $29.99 for a queen set on Amazon

It’s hard to argue with more than 49,000 reviews on Amazon, averaging 4.4 stars — which makes these among the best-selling, best-reviewed sheets on the entire site.

These sheets are also the pick of Alesandra Woolley, the executive editor of mattress review site Mattress Advisor, who notes that they are “great for those who sleep hot as they are super breathable,” adding that they come with a 100% money-back guarantee. (Full disclosure: I own these sheets and love them.)

One verified Amazon reviewer writes that the sheets even converted her from buying cotton sheets: “I have become a microfiber sheet fan (if there is such a thing). The combination of low price, decent quality, and increasing softness justifies the praise these and other microfiber sheet sets are receiving.”

California Design Den 100% Cotton, 400-Thread Count Sheets: About $41.99 for a queen set on Amazon

Not a fan of microfiber? Trapskin recommends these 100% cotton, 400-thread count sheets for their “smooth sateen weave,” lots of patterns to choose from and “labels for foot and side so no guessing involved when putting a fitted sheet on.”

Plenty of Amazon customers like these sheets, as they score 4.5 stars with more than 3,100 reviews. One verified customer raves of these: “Stop searching, you want these sheets.” Trapskin adds that cotton can be more durable and pill less than microfiber.

Target Threshold 100% cotton 400-thread count sheets: About $44.99 for a queen set on Target

Trapskin says Target’s Threshold line of sheets — some of which are over $50 — offers great quality for the price. “These are a good buy,” he notes. Product review site Wirecutter clearly concurs, choosing these as their ultra-budget pick. “We think they’re an exceptional value, especially if you like the feel of sateen and don’t mind sacrificing a little softness,” Wirecutter writes.

Brooklyn Bedding Brushed Microfiber Sheets: About $30 for a queen set on Amazon

Bill Fish, the founder of sleep information site Tuck.com, says these are his pick for the sheets that offer you the best bang for your buck. The microfiber sheets don’t shrink or wrinkle much and come in six colors, he explains, adding that you can often get them for an even better deal: “Brooklyn Bedding often runs promotions where you can get a discount from that price as well.”

Of course, there are plenty of experts who say that you won’t find decent enough sheets for under $50. Interior Designer Joshua Smith notes that “it’s hard to find a whole set for under $50 and not compromise quality of the threads.” And experts say you often find that pricier sheets are softer and more durable. Still, when the price is just $50, it may be worth a shot.

Whatever you decide to buy or spend, there are a number of thorough buying guides for sheets out there. This one from Better Homes & Gardens is a great starting point. And we love this tip from BH&G: “Not sure which bed sheet fabric is best for you? Buy a pair of pillowcases and see how you like them before committing to a complete set of sheets.”
